Marseille Market and Cooking
Marseille, France
Available April to October
Take this unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a day of cooking and exploration with an experienced cook who will share the specialities from this incredible city on the south coast of France. Marseille is the oldest city in France and is known for many things but especially for its iconic dish Bouillabaisse. You will learn delicious and authentic Provencal recipes, taught by a man who was born in this very place and who learned how to cook from his family.
You will meet at 9:30am at a central meeting point in Marseille and be led to the Old Port market where you will visit the fish market, meeting the fisherman and seeing their catch, an experience in itself. Then onto the market for the other ingredients for your cooking class with a stop by the wine shop for wines to accompany your meal. After a short walk, you will arrive to the family home where you will have your lesson in a fully equipped kitchen area on a covered patio.
Some of the Marseille recipes you may learn will include the famed Bouillabaisse, Pistou soup, tapenade, grilled red peppers, aïoli, Lamb with anchovy butter, Poutargue and eggplant caviar. Your entertaining instructor will share with you stories of the locals, his family history and how his relatives were experienced fishermen, bringing home their catch for the entire family. You will then reap your reward as you dine on your creations on a spacious patio, with a glass of wine and with new friends.
The day involves about one hour of walking and you will be walked back to the historic district of Marseille in the Old Port between 3-4pm.
